Web Design for Dummies packs an impressive amount of information in an easy-to-use format. The ample screen shots show you what to do, while the many tip/warning icons provide time-saving ideas. But what I like best about it is that overall it helps break down the *process* of designing web sites. That way, you can see how the pros construct great sites, using a realistic workflow. It helps you focus on designing sites one piece at a time, which is quite empowering.Whether you are simply browsing for ideas or you are working through a chapter in depth, this book will not disappoint!

Most of the Dummies books I know of are pitched to the ordinary joe. I bought this book assuming that it would be too, so it would help me design my own web page. Not so. This is for people who want to make a career out of designing web pages. It assumes that you will be part of a team that includes marketing people, designers (in addition to you), media specialists, “HTML slingers,” programmers, and a producer to pull the team together and bring the project in on time and on budget.
Well, okay. If you are the person it’s written for, I suspect that you would give it five stars, like the other reviewers. Even with the disconnect, I got so much out of parts of it that I’ll give it four. I will bet, however, that if your ambitions are as modest as mine are, there are other, better books.

This book was very informative, but not what I expected. It isn’t for the regular person wanting to learn how to design their own website, it is for professionals wanting to get into the business of designing web sites.

Thanks Lisa

I personally enjoyed reading this book because it’s clear and easy to follow. The information in it is very practical. For example, it gives specific steps to take if one is interested in becoming a freelance web-designer. It also mentions a 5-step process with regards to dealing with clients. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in web design. This goes for those who are thinking about starting their own web design business as well as for those who are planning to work for a company. The author has a very good sense of humor which makes the book even more interesting and fun to read. I liked it so much that I couldn’t put it down.

I’m a full-time web development instructor with both high-school and returning adult students. I am using this book in my web design class. I liked the introductory chapter and the chapter on tables. However my students and I have run into a number of code errors (especially in the frames chapter) that are unacceptable. So I will continue looking for an excellent instructional book on web design. This book doesn’t fit that criteria and I will not force it upon future students.

Clearly written/explained for the beginner or for an easy-to- follow review of HTML. Pages are well laid out and easy to read. It’s important to me to be able to read the text while sitting in front of the monitor, therefore a book should be legible at “lap height”. My only complaint is that “figure” examples should printed on the same page as the text explaining them.

This book is a bit outdated but it was required for my Web Development and Design class for college. If you have NEVER been exposed to HTML or CSS then you will find it helpful. If you already know HTML and only need to learn CSS, you are better off learning CSS off the web or a book dedicated to CSS. With this book we had to use the Macromedia Dreamweaver 8 book by Shelly Cashman Wells Freund. For the brand new price of this book, it would be wiser to spend that extra money elsewhere. But if you really need this book you should rent the book for class from Chegg (that’s what I did).
I started HTML in 1998, the only thing I saw useful was using CSS to make your pages uniform. The book doesn’t really teach how to make re-usable templates which would have been useful. You’re better off getting a reference book if you want to learn HTML & CSS tags and how to use them.

My beginning web design class uses this (along with a “Master VISUALLY Dreamweaver CS4 and Flash CS4 Professional”) to define and teach the princles for correct web design. This book is definitely good for understanding the principles involved in web site creation and implementation. Specifically, how to build a web site to your individual audience and concerns to have when organizing, creating, and designing the content of the site. It’s very thorough for this means. I understand that there are some ‘coding’ issues with some of the examples shown in the book. I have not actually followed any of the examples but use it as a learning point of what to do/not to do for my own web site.

This textbook was a requirement for web design. An intermediate course. This book is just way tooooo basic and a little confusing with items that should not be confusing. The moment I bought it, I returned it immediately as I knew it would not teach me anything. I was right and got a B+ in the class.
You can probably learn more by viewing the HTML of any website of your choosing.
