The university of Quebec in Chicoutimi (UQAC) will form, since the fall of 2008, of the specialist chemists of the natural health products. The final exam in the science of natural products will be a program unique to Canada.
This appraisal is not however not new to the UQAC, explain Joe Piper, director of the module of the fundamental sciences, "Since close to 30 years, researchers in the chemistry of our department developed an appraisal in the valorization of the natural products descended of the boreal forest. "
"We should have reconsidered our program because of company’s important decrease in the chemistry degree courses, in all universities of Quebec", sustains Joe Piper. "But attention, the new program does not aim to form some naturopaths, it stays a scientific training", he / it insists.
The first training will be centered on the organic chemistry, completed by a shutter in botany. The students will familiarize themselves as much with identification and the anatomy of the plants as with their chemical composition, their active properties and their therapeutic potential. At the end of their studies, the new graduates will be accredited by the order of the chemists of Quebec. The uqac hopes to welcome about fifteen students for the first year of the program.
"This training in the science of natural products is a more modern version of the studies in chemistry," affirm Michel Gagnon, chemistry professor at the origin of the creation of the new program. This new specialization will allow the future graduates to head toward the valorization of the natural products in sectors in emergence as the hair oils or descended the domestic products of natural substances.
They will also follow the more traditional ways as to work in laboratory for the manufacture of pharmaceutical products or superior to pursue studies in peak research. The control of quality of the natural health products, whose regulation is sterner since some years in Canada, could be another outlet for the finishing of the program.
