The risk to undergo a cerebral vascular accident (AVC) after one visit at a chiropractic would not be more elevated than after a consultation at the physician or to the emergency.
It is what a survey indicates structural canadienne1 on the registers of intervening AVC of 1993 to 2002 in the province of the Ontario.
During the last years, some studies raised some suspicions as for the risk to undergo an AVC of a rare type. subsequent to a rupture of the vertebral artery following a manipulation of the vertebras of the neck by the chiropractic.
According to the researchers, the probability that such an incident occurs would be the order of 1 on 5,85 millions.
During the nine years of reference, the Ontario counted 818 cases of AVC attributable to a rupture of the vertebral artery, preceded to 80% of headaches or the neck. In the 30 previous days their AVC, 4% of the patients had visited a chiropractic, against 53% that had consulted a physician (for the same motive) in a cabinet or to the emergency.
Results: that the patients visited a physician or underwent a cervical manipulation by a chiropractic, the risk of AVC was similar. However, for an unexplained reason, this risk was raised more at the less than 45 years, that they consulted a physician or a chiropractic.
According to the authors, the survey confirms the existence of an association between the cervical manipulation and the risk to undergo an AVC, while specifying that this risk " is not excessive."
They insist affirming that the tie of reason to effect is not demonstrated: the AVC ensuing of a dissection of the vertebral artery being preceded of headaches or to the neck, one doesn’t know again if these symptoms are precursors of the AVC or if they are the consequence of it.
