Other studies arrived to the conclusion that to take care of a sick parent and suffering to the coast had closely rather ominous effects on health. The results of the present survey demonstrate the opposite: the gestures of help and altruism would permit to live longer.

According to the results, the eldest who dedicated 14 hours and more per day to take care of their spouse half risks reduced them to die during the seven years that lasted the survey, compared to those that had their person to load.

“To be active by the beloved person would permit to control stress generated by the fact stand to see to it” better, explain psychologist Stephanie L. Brown, main author of the survey. Of 1993 to 2000, the researchers questioned 1 688 American couples of 70 years and more living in an autonomous way. Every member of the couple had to list the list of the daily tasks done to offer them half: to help the other to eat, to dress, to wash, to prepare the meals, to make the grocery store, to take care of the finances and the medication.

Most participants (81%) affirmed not to have received help of their spouse. About 9% said to have benefited from less than 14 hours per day of care, 10% answered to have received 14 and more hours of care per day. More than 900 people died during the survey.
