The fatty acids omega 3 that fish contains could contribute to warn the diabetes of type 1. It is what the results of a étude1 published lately in the prestigious newspaper of the American medical association indicate (JAMA).

American researchers of the Faculty of medicine of the university of Colorado followed, during six years, 1 770 young children who had risks raised to suffer from diabetes of type 12. The participants were aged of about one year in the beginning of the survey and no one had contracted the illness again.

According to their results, the children who consumed the more of omega 3 of navy source ran two times less risk to become diabetics, compared to those that consumed the less of them.

Lasting six years, the researchers valued, with the help of questionnaires on the food habits, the contribution in omega 3 of navy source of each of the participants. They analyzed, periodically, the physiological scorers of the auto-immune reaction that lead to the apparition of the diabetes.

In a subgroup composed of 244 participants, the researchers also proceeded, all along the six years of follow-up, to blood analyses aiming to measure the real presence of the omega 3 in the organism of the children. Among the subjects of the subgroup, an important contribution in omega 3 decreased of 37% the risk to become diabetic.

This protective effect of the omega 3 would come from their anti-inflammatory action, believe the authors of the survey. According to them, the hold of an omega 3 supplement could prove to be, in a brought closer future, an efficient and sure intervention to warn the diabetes of type 1 at the children to risk.

The role of the food

According to the Dr Louis Geoffroy, pediatrician to the Clinic of the diabetes of the Co-Justine hospital, to Canada, these results are ” very interesting and believable”. He/it recalls however that research is some to his/her/its beginnings in this domain. ” One ignores again in what measure the consumption of omega 3 could have meaningful clinical effects long-term”, he/it affirms.

These findings are going to stimulate the studies however on the role of the food in the starting point of the diabetes of type 1, add the Dr Geoffroy. The role of the omega 3 doesn’t represent while one of the hypotheses currently to the survey. ” One thinks, for example, that the bovine proteins and meats smoked would be of the releases of the process leading to the diabetes of type 1″, explain the Dr Geoffroy.
