Question by hopem.: Is it legal for my manager to cut hours?
I work part time in a well known company that has multiple managers. Lately, they’ve been cutting my hours saying that they are going “over” on theyre hours and theyve overscheduled too many people. Sometimes I feel like they even cut hours when the day is going green and we’re making our financial goals. I have a feeling that what they are doing is not legal. Is it legal for them to cut hours like this?

Actually yeah it is legal for your boss or bosses to cut hours. Companies are only given so much money for salaries and staff each month and if they are over on that then they have to cut hours because they need to get the money under control. Most common careers for this to happen in are retail when they are having a slow month, movie theaters because they often over staff their stores for big movies and then it causes trouble for them later, fast food workers all have this problem. But they can legally do what they need to if they can’t pay the over head costs or things like that.

Sounds like argos to me… read yoru contract, pretty sure most big firms will have a clause saying they have the right to cut hours, annoying i know.. only thing you can do is go self employed

Management reserves the right to manage hours of its employees. It’s certainly better than layoffs.

Your employer has a duty to provide you with work. If you are contracted to work 16 hours they must provide you with 16 hours work (or pay you for 16). The only way they can get around this is to cut your contracted hours by giving you written notice.

If you have been working overtime and it is the overtime they are cutting, then this depends on if you have been regular overtime for a fixed period. If you have then it could be argued that the overtime has become an implied part of your contract of employment.

Your best bet in this case is to contact your Trade Union, if you have one, or if not Citizens Advice

If you’re in the US, yes it’s legal unless you have a contract requiring more hours which isn’t likelyl
