Acupuncture and migraines: more that an effect placebo
The classic acupuncture would be more efficient than a placebo treatment to treat the migraine, according to a survey italienne1.
Up to here, the clinical tests had given the results indicating that the acupuncture would be efficient to relieve the headaches, but not more that the placebo treatments (needles inserted out of the valid points of acupuncture) 2.
In order to have the clean heart of it, the Italian researchers led a clinical test by 160 migraine. Lasting six months, all patients took the rizatriptan, if need be, to relieve the pain. The efficiency of this medicine is recognized for the treatment of the migraine. The participants have been divided in four groups of 40 sujets3.
According to the results, the participants who received acupuncture treatments of classic (group 1) were the only ones to feel a meaningful reduction of their symptoms after six months of session. They were also the only ones to decrease their medication to the term of the test.
However, the researchers observed an effect at the placebo participants of the group 2. The needles were placed on the points of acupuncture, but were not driven in skin. These topics noted a reduction of the pain all the same after three months of treatment. They also decreased their medication, but the effect dimmed at the end of six months.
The patients whose needles were inserted out of the valid points of acupuncture (group 3) and those that only took the rizatriptan (group 4) felt an improvement of their state also, but not as much as those of the groups 1 and 2.
The authors of the survey conclude that the artificial acupuncture has an effect on the placebo migraine, but that the real acupuncture procures lasting kindness superior to those of a placebo, as well as to those of the rizatriptan.
