Great book but student website disappointing,
I purchased this book directly from the publisher because I wanted my son to have access to all the cool internet videos and additional information that was meant to be available on the publisher’s website. The website is poorly designed, hard to navigate and not at all as I was lead to believe by the online previews.
In hindsight I would not have purchased this book. I would have gone with the older Dragonfly edition that already has plenty of additional websites that provide additional information and online videos to tie in with the text.
Very disappointing considering what I paid for the book.

|Good for homeschool, but may need science background,
This is a good, colorful, well-written textbook. If you are homeschooling, it goes much better if you have the Teacher’s Edition. I have a strong background in Science, and I still found myself referring to the Teacher’s Edition a lot. I also bought the Workbook A, and the Lab Manual A, with Teacher’s Editions for both. The workbook really isn’t all that much different from the assessments at the end of each chapter, but does have diagrams that are helpful. The Teacher’s Edition of the Lab manual is a must, it covers the prep you need to do beforehand. I teach in a co-op, and have had good success with this textbook. The online stuff is very disappointing, and if you call Pearson they will tell you that the really good online stuff is only for big ISD’s that buy their textbook. But they don’t tell you that BEFORE you buy it. Labs have pre-Lab questions in the textbook, so if you know how to run labs, you’ll know what to do. There is a secular slant to the textbook, and the chapters on Darwin and natural selection are clear enough that you can teach Creationist views at the same time. If I had it to do over, I wouldn’t buy the Workbook. I’d find my own diagrams on the Internet and use the Chapter Review questions for the kids.

|Book difficult to find,
Probably just me, but it’s difficult buying textbooks for your kids when you need the right edition. All these product descriptions are very dark when it comes to edition information, and it’s basically not easy to learn simply “what is the latest edition of this book” without some major sleuthing around. I suspect that the sellers are keen to offload the older editions so they are hazy on the fact that their book is the old version. Plus, I have no idea what the difference is between all these versions – teacher editions, Texas editions (is biology different out there?) On-Level Student editions. What’s the difference between the dragonfly book and the parrot? Plus, the other reviewer was right above – the website for this book does look like a first grade project that got a B. Probably the author’s idea of how to bond with kids. Well, guess what, fellas? There’s people trying to get real information off there.

|Biology!,
It’s a good book. I used it for both of my semesters of biology. It’s an easy read for the most part.
